A History of Psychology: Ideas and Context (2nd Edition)
Published in Hardcover by Pearson Allyn & Bacon (09 July, 1997)
Authors: Wayne Viney and D. Brett King
Average review score:

A Thorough Evaluation of the History of Psychology
As a student at the University of Colorado at Boulder, I had the priviledge to take classes taught by the authors of the text. Dr. Viney taught History of Psychology, while Dr. King taught Abnormal Psychology. This text was required reading for History of Psychology. At first, I thought, "oh great, he literally WROTE THE BOOK!" The text is thorough and easy to read. Drs. Viney and King lay out the subjects clearly. The subject matter is made "easy to swallow", as the History of Psychology isn't the most exciting subject in the matter of psychology.

Homosexuality in the Ancient World (Studies in Homosexuality, Vol 1)
Published in Hardcover by Garland Pub (October, 1992)
Authors: Wayne R. Dynes and Stephen Donaldson
Average review score:

recommendable book
This is a very interesting and readable book not only for gay people but also for bisexual/heterosexual-inclined people. However I was a little bit dissapointed when I received the book, since I expected from the title a comprehensive and more systematic volume, but it is an omnibus-styled book collected from French, German and English theses. And editor's introduction is not sufficient , lacking historical survey of homosexuality in the ancient world---- for example I could not find any research on the famous male-boy marriage of Hittite law. In addition some pages of E. Bethe's copy are blurred-printed or rather almost obliterated making them difficult to read. Although noticing these weak points, I highly recommend this book for serious readers because of its excellent quality and minute research.

P.S. I wonder what is "Ancient World" for English-speaking people, since most of "Ancient" History books written in English are limited mainly about the Mediterranean region with Mesopotamia and excluded many other ancient worlds, e.g. ancient India, ancient China, ancient Japan, ancient America, etc.

How to Build Your Dream Cabin in the Woods : The Ultimate Guide to Building and Maintaining a Backcountry Getaway
Published in Hardcover by The Lyons Press (01 May, 2002)
Author: J. Wayne Fears
Average review score:

Wide-Ranging and Well-Done
Unlike many of the newer books on building cabins, Fears states that anything over 1000 square feet in NOT a cabin. Readers looking for a general introduction to cabin building and living will find a wealth of information here. Fears is serious about what it takes to build and live in a small cabin. Most of the plans he reviews are for cabins from about 400 to 800 feet square. So, this is a real cabin book! Yuppies wanting to build custom homes in the woods will be put off when Fears describes (in depth) the building and proper use of an outhouse.
Fears discusses land choices, cabin building styles and materials, lighting, heating, options for water supplies, and kitchens. He seriously suggests not having electricity at all.
Toward the end of the book you will also find suggestions for building a rifle range, concerns over making your cabin secure, how to safely use a chain saw, and other helpful information.
At times Fears comes across like the "good-old-boy" he is. At other times he shows a deep knowledge of Aldo Leopold. It seems to me a rare and wonderful combination.
This book does NOT tell you how to actually construct a cabin. But for those of us beginning the process of seriously considering what kind of cabin we want, where to put it, and the basics of design, we find a well-written and genuinely useful book. Highly Recommended.

The most readable and detailed Cardiology Text available
Hurst's, "The Heart", is a comprehensive text of general cardiology that is applicable to both general phtsicians as well as cardiology specialists. It is up to date, addressing current issues ,yet still details the basics such as physiology, embryology and anatomy. The illustrations and charts are clear and relevant. Overall, an excellent reference book that deserves a place in any physicians library.

In Search of Bisco
Published in Paperback by University of Georgia Press (September, 1995)
Authors: Erskine Caldwell and Wayne Mixon
Average review score:

IN QUEST OF A FRIEND
Erskine Caldwell takes us on a journey in search of a childhood friend whom he never forgot. Erskine and Bisco were good friends as children but were torn apart due to the segregationist mores of their times. Bisco was a so-called Negro and Erskine a so-called White. The two were destined to inhabit a land and culture which promoted inequality and friendship for both young people.

In Search of Bisco is a chronicle of Caldwell's search not only for his friend (now that he is an adult) but also an examination of the root sources of hatred and racism that separated the two. He takes us to South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana and their varied communities and asks about his friend. He gets a wealth of information about attitudes both black and white concerning Bisco.

Caldwell's south as he knew it doesn't exist today but the attitudes that it nurtured still persist. Bisco is more than a mistreated Black man but for Caldwell has become a metaphor for the oppression of Blacks throughout the south. In every state, whites share their contempt for the Biscos of this world. When encountering Blacks Caldwell finds rebellious Biscos, conservative Biscos and proud Biscos who refuse to bow to the conventions of their day. The reader is given a superb portrait of the struggle of African-Americans in the south prior to the civil rights movement and the attitudes of their white counterparts.

Bisco is a commentary on race but most of all it is a look at a friendship that could have blossomed but was stunted early in these men's lives. Bisco and Erskine show us the possibilities of what could have been in the south in terms of enduring friendships. Erskine presents us with the harsh realities. This is an excellent book worth your reading and reflection over a time and a friendship that is no more.

Iowa's Geological Past: Three Billion Years of Earth History (Bur Oak Original)
Published in Hardcover by University of Iowa Press (December, 1998)
Author: Wayne I. Anderson
Average review score:

There's more to Iowa's geology than you thought
The author spends four hundred interesting pages explaining in detail the geology of a state you would have thought didn't have any. It's well-written, with many charts, drawings and maps. For each period there is also a good list and description of the life forms prevalent.

I'd strongly recommend it to anyone interested in geology or just an interesting read.

Journey to the Haunted Planet: An Interstellar Adventure With 12 Cosmic Holograms
Published in Hardcover by Harpercollins Juvenile Books (September, 1995)
Authors: A. J. Wood, Wayne Andersen, and Wayne Anderson
Average review score:

Journey to Haunted Planet Fascinates Kids
The best thing about Journey to the Haunted Planet is the 12 silvery holograms of aliens within the book. The holograms hold the odd faces of aliens and moon-like craters and surfaces. While the story is a little simplistic, the holograms will fascinate kids of all ages, including parents. I'd especially recommend the book for boys.

Kathryn Kuhlman: The Woman Behind the Miracles
Published in Paperback by Servant Publications (July, 1993)
Author: Wayne Warner
Average review score:

A Second Biography
While Jamie Buckingham's 'Daughter of Destiny' remains the definitive biography of Miss Kuhlman, this is a valuable collection of interviews and insights that help to better explain Miss Kuhlman's personality and history. Her connection to Aimee Semple McPherson is not as accidental as once thought and her devastating divorce in the 1940's and the collapse of her early success in Colorado was more bitter and scar-filled than even Buckingham (with his brutal honesty) records. Despite claims to the contrary, Warner concludes, like Buckingham, that Miss Kuhlman, not unlike Aimee Semple McPherson, was unique without a direct successor.

Land of Eight Million Dreams (Year of the Lotus Series)
Published in Paperback by White Wolf Publishing Inc. (December, 1998)
Authors: Deena McKinney, Jim Moore, and Wayne Peacock
Average review score:

Great Book another addition to the Year of the Lotus Series
The was great and essential for every Changeling player. Dive into the Middle Kingdom and learn the secrets of the exotic and enigmatic Shinma, the Kithian native to the East. These exiled servants of the August Personage of Jade. Their hatred of the Wan Xian, their powers to control the elements known as Wu Tan. From the noble and regal Kamuii to the humane and heroic Hiriyanu the stories are endless. However I was unable to give 5 stars to the books since it lacked explicit infomation and did not cover all questions a Changeling Player may have and complications STs may find with this lack of info. However, it's worth it! ; )
